Guess who has *poses and does jazzy hands* a new Strahd party member! Yayzers!
And! She’s the only person in the entire party with good charisma. She is also, by pure chance, an awful and chronic liar who Shiv is *sure* is werewolf (she is, in fact, not. At all. Just a half elf here.) (<- this was bc I rolled an insight check for myself to decide what Shiv would assume abt her, (I rolled a nat 1) and we were, tbf, in the middle of a forest, having just passed by the worlds most haunted castle. Gee, I wonder what that castle and these crows are about. )
Dnd was sadly cancelled this week and the next bc of exams 😔. but the DM must sleep

I thought I didn’t like combat in dnd but actually the only thing I don’t like about it is the stress that I’m taking too long to do things, otherwise combat is fun
#I am a first time player playing with veteran players#so I already take longer#but I am also a Druid that has a split in health things and animal conjuring things#so I’m constantly balancing how to structure my actions and bonus actions#‘okay if I do this as my action I can bonus action healing word but shit I might be in a bad spot I need to bonus misty step’#‘so I’ll use my one damage causing cantrip as action and bonus misty’#but on top of that I also usually conjure animals my first turn so I’m acting for at least one other creature as well#so on top of figuring out my shit I also have to move and act for however many animals I’ve got going on#it’s a headache lol so I get worried I’m taking too long but I like doing my stuff I’m just like ‘ahhh everyone is waiting on me!!!’

Several weeks ago, my retirement-age mother requested that I play Baldur’s Gate 3 for her because she has trouble with controllers/keyboards and wanted “to see what all the fuss is about with that cute wizard boy.” For context, my mother and I have done this sort of thing in the past with certain RPGs (dragon age, mass effect, etc.), but it’s been a few years since she’s personally requested a game like this. Basically, I control her Tav but let her make all the choices so she can determine how the story plays out without worrying about mechanics. She treats it like a choose-your-own-adventure book.
Anyway, here is a list of some of the things my mother has said and/or chosen to do throughout the course of BG3 in no particular order:
She is (obviously) romancing Gale. She is quite smitten with him and his passion for books and learning; she also thinks he’s polite and qualifies as “relationship material.” She also REALLY likes the things he’s said about his cat so far (my mom is a cat lady), so I know she’s gonna flip shit when we meet Tara in Act III.
She’s playing a normal druid Tav with a generally good alignment. Her favorite spell is Spike Growth because she thinks it’s hilarious whenever enemies walk into the AOE and die. I usually end up having to cast it at least once per battle per her request. Sometimes twice.
Contrary to her alignment, my mother tasks me with robbing every single chest, crate, barrel, and burlap sack we come across; this also includes people and their pockets. The party is always at max carrying capacity. ALWAYS. She doesn’t like selling things because “what if I need them.” The camp stash is in literal shambles. There is no hope of organizing it. She’s got like fifty seven sets of rags and a billion pieces of random silverware.
She MUST talk to every animal and corpse in the game. I think five hours of her total playtime so far (47ish) has been spent speaking to animals as many times as humanly possible. Like, I was thorough in my own playthroughs, but this is on a whole other level.
She did NOT get Volo’s lobotomy, but she did let Auntie Ethel take her eye in hopes of a cure for the tadpole. I did not understand the logic then. I still do not understand it now.
She is far more interested in fashion than equipment stats. Do you have any idea how much gold I’ve had to spend on dyes just to make things match? SO much. Same vibe as that “please someone help me balance my finances my family is starving” tweet but instead of candles it’s thirty thousand fucking bottles of black and furnace red dye.
We broke the prisoners out of Moonrise, but they got on the boat too early and bugged the fight by leaving Astarion and Karlach behind. Wulbren Bongle somehow got stuck in combat mode even after engaging the cutscene on the docks below Last Light; he he kept trying to run ALL THE WAY BACK TO MOONRISE nine fucking meters at a time while I frantically tried to finish the fight with the Warden, otherwise Wulbren would have run straight into the shadow curse. (I would’ve let him go; fuck Wulbren Bongle, all my homies hate Wulbren Bongle. But my mom didn’t know that, and she wanted to keep him safe. So.)
She had me reload a save like eighteen times to save the giant eagles on top of Rosymorn Monastery. Wouldn’t even let me do non-lethal damage just to get past things. I think getting that warhammer for the dawnmaster puzzle took us like an hour and a half alone. (Yes, I know you can use any warhammer, but SHE didn’t.)
She’s started keeping an irl notebook to keep track of her quests between play sessions. She writes down ideas and strategies when she thinks of them during the week, then brings them to her next game session at my house. I think she wrote about three pages on possible approaches to the goblin fortress alone.
She insists that I pet Scratch and the owlbear cub before every single long rest, no exceptions. Sometimes I have to do it multiple times until she is absolutely sure that the animals know exactly how much she loves and cherishes them. She has also commissioned a crocheted owlbear plush from a friend of hers and is very excited.
I’m sure there’s a bunch of stuff I’m forgetting, but those are some fun things I thought of. She’s enjoying the game and is telling all of her retired friends to get it and play it for themselves. She asked me “what is Discord” yesterday and I think my life flashed before my eyes.
anyway shout out to my mom for being neat

On Act 3 and the lack of companion reactivity and dialogue.
So, I officially hit 400 hours on BG3 yesterday (no lifing it lmao) and I've been thinking about some things I wish Larian would improve or wish that they had implemented. A big thing that comes to mind is how much companion reactivity and dialogue abruptly stops in Act 3.
Act 1 really shines with companion reactivity. They always have something to say to the MC, to NPCs, or even to each other! I love the interaction after you use your ilithid powers for the first time and it's a 4 way conversation between everyone.
Then we get to Act 3 and there's such huge drop-off. Some big offenses:
Very little reaction to quests and locations. When I killed Raphael I only got comments from Astarion and Gale! Seriously?? We just survived a trip to the Hells! This happens with multiple quests
Blank faces when Durge is killed by Bhaal.
Camp is lifeless. Everyone just stands in front of their bed, There are no interactions.
In my playthrough, the Emporer admitted to my Tav he was manipulating her and didn't really care. It was bummer I couldn't talk to the other tadpole gang about it.
I remember coming across a Druid in the city. He was trying to heal a tree. So I went back and grabbed Halsin because he was complaining no one in the city cared about nature or balance. So I thought surely, he would have an interaction here! Nope, nothing!
As soon as you finish a companion's personal quest that is basically the end of your interactions with them; even if you romance them.
What I'd like to see: (Disclaimer: Just my opinions. I have no expectation of any of this being added to the game)
More camp interaction between companions. Jahiera and Minsc had a great example of this. Let there be a quick cutscene of Minsc and Halsin arm wrestling. Shadowheart, Karlach, and Astarion drinking wine. Anything. DA:I did a great job at this. It seemed like anytime I approached someone for dialogue they were in the middle of an interaction with someone else. Or events like the card game. It brought a lot of life into the party.
More random city encounters. They did a good job with Karlach; she has interactions with the steel watcher and her friend Fitz. Would have been cool to have some of those with Wyll, maybe he meets another noble or a flaming fist and has to deal with their shock of seeing him as a devil. Or with Gale in Sorcerous Sundries (he is a famous wizard after all!). Astarion mentions he needs to keep a low profile in the taverns; what if someone called him out!
More reactions to story events.
Expand on romances a bit more. We don't need it to be a dating sim but if you finish your LI's quest early on get used to just asking for small pecks and that's it. I would like to see more romance-specific dialogue for quest reactions.
And Finally:
We needed all companions at the final battle. Everyone should have been at the main keep before confronting the brain. You should have had your final conversations with them before you all potentially die in battle. DA:O style. A passionate kiss with your LI (not a tiny little peck lmao). This was a huge exclusion.
Anyway, these are my thoughts on the matter. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

A Likely Pair
Summary: Astarion has been desperately attempting to earn your affection. At the tiefling party, he uses your drunken inhibitions to his advantage. Not knowing you have your own share of trauma, his evening is derailed, likely for the better… Gender Neutral!Reader/Astarion Tags: Implied SA, Angst and Fluff, No Pronouns, Sexual implications but nothing happens, reader has sexual trauma, follows events of Act 1 Astarion Romance. Word Count: 2k AO3 | Masterlist
*A/N: This is extremely self-indulgent. Inspired by a beautiful fic from @tavs-tressym. I didn’t want to make this an OC, because I want my writing to be as accessible as possible, but it’s glaringly obvious that this is written from my own experiences… Again, TW for SA*
Your world has been turned upside down since the day that damned illithid parasite wormed its way into you, but more so since meeting the colorful band of companions who’ve chosen to join you.
Some will still deny it, but you’re magnetic. You don’t complain or nag, rather just handle situations without missing a beat, and your relentless optimism isn’t as suffocating as one might think.
You hate the term leader. You’re not above any of your companions, you just happen to do the talking and the problem-solving.
The independence that was so valuable throughout your life is hard to unlearn, relying on your companions is still something you’re grappling with. But above all else, the quality that comes to mind when thinking of you is that damned charm.
You were always teetering on the edge of plausible deniability. Your companions have started to expect it from you, most believing it’s just your personality. You’re attractive, decently kind, and effortlessly funny.
Mix those qualities, and you get someone whose banter and compliments confound most. You can’t help it, it’s just who you are. It doesn’t help that you genuinely find each of your companions endearing.
There are these moments when you’re spending time with one of them, and they attempt to reciprocate. That’s where the delicate dance begins. Once it clicks in your head that they’re flirting or making implications, you’re gone. Leaving them in their bemusement.
There’s one companion who’s especially engaging. The banter is never dull, because he too has learned this dance. It’s not hard to admit Astarion is indisputably gorgeous. Your personalities are two sides of the same coin. The mischief is like a song, the harmonies balanced.
It’s plain to see that Astarion is pursuing you with the most vigor. You act coy, but you secretly enjoy it, even if it frustrates him to no end. He should have been able to seduce you by now. Knowing that if he could be the one to have you, he’d be protected.
Every time he thinks he’s got you, and his words are more than innuendo, you’ve cleverly removed yourself from the equation. You’re not sure why you do it. Astarion is attractive, and the flutter in your stomach can’t always be blamed on shitty cooking.
There’s something in you that stops anyone from getting too close, at least in that way. You don’t know why? You’ve healed, right? It’s been years since it happened. The touch of others doesn’t make your skin crawl like it used to.
Mother always said it’s natural to touch and kiss others. So why is it that every time they get close, you pull away?
Tonight, the people you so 'selflessly' saved in the Emerald Grove have insisted on throwing a party. Your flirtatious nature is only amplified by the increasing amount of alcohol in your system. You might have even met your match with the Arch-Druid Halsin, but no one is trying as hard as Astarion, and with your inhibitions lowered, you’re starting to consider his proposal.
Swiftly shooting down every other offer is second nature, but for whatever reason, you leave Astarion’s up in the air.
The party stretches on, and you’re not ready to turn in yet, a force compels you back to the rogue’s tent. A drink in hand, you drunkenly saunter back to Astarion, your body leading you like a moth to flames.
Astarion sees you cross back over to him, his gaze unabashed as his eyes rake over your form. This was it, he was finally going to seduce you. As a drunken grin stretches across your face, he feigns a pout, his voice a purr,
“I’m glad you’re back darling. I started to consider you’d found company elsewhere”
You grin and shake your head teasingly, “Most of the ‘company’ has turned in. If there’s someone I know to stay up late, it’s you Astarion dearest”
The wolfish grin you know all too well returns to his face, and he leans in closer, “Well darling if staying up is what you desire, my offer still stands~”
Normally this would be when you’d conveniently snake your way out of the conversation, but the alcohol, and the way he looks in this dim lighting, have you considering it.
Of course, Astarion notices this immediately, and his grin only widens. He knew alcohol would be the key to finally having you. Without letting you respond, he’s moving closer, his voice lowering,
“I’m gonna take that as a yes. Finish that drink of yours and meet me in the clearing near the stream, I’ll be waiting darling.“
With that, he’s gone, slipping away to not give you the chance to say no. Your mind is reeling, did you just agree to do this? Now you feel obligated to go, what if he’s there waiting all night for you?
Finishing your drink, you go back to your tent to check yourself, suddenly feeling a bit nervous.
As you walk out to the clearing, you look good. A drunken saunter looks sexy on everyone, right? But it’s not your looks you’re concerned with.
You can do this. It’s no big deal, right? Maybe he doesn’t even actually want sex? But even so, it’s fine. Sex is normal. People do it all the time. Why can’t you?
As you walk into the clearing, he’s posed against a tree, and saunters from his spot. It’s almost comical to you. There’s something so practiced about his movements, the way he’s already lost his shirt.
His body is gorgeous, he’s placed himself so the moonlight casts shadows on the lines of his body, illuminating his pale skin. You wouldn’t be surprised if he scouted and planned this days ago.
Even his voice is perfectly practiced as he purrs, “There you are. I’ve been waiting for you.”
You keep up your playfulness, despite your racing mind, “Poor thing, I was worried you’d be out here all night.”
Astarion cocks a brow and hums, “Oh? Don’t tell me you’ve been reconsidering? it’s so obvious you want this, you mustn’t deny it any longer darling.”
You narrow your eyes teasingly, “And what’s that Astarion? What is it you think I want?”
His predatory expression grows more intense, but inside, he’s growing impatient. Why are you so difficult? “Darling, I think it’s pleasure you want. To lose yourself in me”
You grin, finding comfort in the stalling, “Astarion dearest, I quite like myself. But what is it you want?”
Your question takes him off guard. You see his eyes flicker as if you’d struck some nerve. It takes him a beat to get back on track, and as quick as it was there, it’s gone. The suave charm back,
“What do any of us want, darling? A pleasurable distraction. To find solace in each other.”
His words combined with your intoxication have you nodding, but you’ve lost the playfulness. “If that’s what you want, I’m inclined to agree”
Astarion notices your shift, but he’s too focused on going through his motions, doing what he knows, what he can control. Astarion won’t admit it, but he likes you. Yet, at the end of the day, his focus is on his survival.
At your agreement, he’s moving in. Not wanting to squander the opportunity. Knowing if he doesn’t seize it now; you might pull away, like you always do.
Astarion breaks through your drunken haze, his touch light and experimental, feeling your body before he closes the distance between you. You start to like it. Your senses zoned in on his touch, enjoying the feeling of his caresses. He moves a hand up to cup your cheek and kisses you.
At first, the kiss was nice. It feels good to kiss him, maybe it just took having a handsome stranger like Astarion to cure you?
The kiss becomes more heated, and you start to melt into him. His hands wander, and he kisses you hungrily, but something feels off.
It starts to become all too much to handle. You’re attracted to Astarion, a lot, but when the kiss grows deeper, your face scrunches up into a whine. Astarion likes you, but this is a job to him, something he deems necessary for you to like him. He’s already on autopilot, his brain registering your whine as one of pleasure.
Your fists clench and you start to shy away from him. Something is wrong. This doesn’t feel right, your issues, mixing with your intuition tell you that neither of you is entirely present. You bring your hands up to his chest and apply pressure, after a moment you gently push him away from you.
Your face is scrunched up as your chest heaves, except it’s not from pleasure. Astarion’s eyes widen as he looks at you, taken completely off guard, nothing like this has ever happened to him.
After a moment of staring at you in confusion, he speaks up, his voice betraying his offense, “What’s wrong?!”
You’re curling into yourself, feeling embarrassed. You shake your head and avert your gaze from him, “I’m sorry, I just, I…” you trail off looking for the words, Astarion cuts you off with a huff,
“What in the bloody hell is your problem?”
Astarion’s mind is racing, has he lost the one thing he was good at? His only valuable asset?
You don’t respond, you can’t stop it, you’re caving into yourself. You try to take deep breaths, your arms wrapped around yourself. Astarion has never seen you behave like this, you’re always the strong, confident one.
Astarion stares as you curl into yourself, watching you walk to the stream nearby, sitting on the bank.
Astarion doesn’t know what to do, he can't remember the last time he cared to comfort another. Why should he? Not like anyone would give a shit if he broke down. He doesn’t even know what to do but his feet are moving, and he gently sits down next to you on the bank, staring into the moving water.
After a long moment, you speak up, eyes never moving from the stream, “I’m sorry Astarion, I hope I didn’t disappoint you”
Whatever Astarion was expecting, it couldn’t have prepared him for the way your words tore through him, he gaped at you his voice unsure, “What do you mean?”
You tear your eyes from the stream, meeting his gaze. Your expression is pained, your voice quiet, “I know you’ve been wanting this Astarion, and I thought I could do it, but it all felt so wrong.”
Astarion’s expression is unusually unguarded. It's as if he’s so perplexed, that he can’t think to put on his usual charming smirk. He stares at you, brows furrowing. Before he can stop himself, his voice uncharacteristically insecure, he’s asking “Did I do something wrong?”
You’re immediately shaking your head, trying to reassure him, “No, no Astarion it’s not you. I just, struggle with things like this”
You both break eye contact, going back to stare into the stream. The silence stretches, but it’s not uncomfortable. After a while, you’ve calmed down and sobered up, you turn to Astarion with a soft smile, “You could put your shirt on if you’d like, you look a little chilly”
Astarion grins up at you, glad that your teasing is back. He rolls his eyes, “Darling, I’m a vampire, I dont get ‘chilly’. Plus, it wouldn’t be fair to those beautiful eyes of yours to cover all of this” he gestures down to his bare abdomen.
You laugh and shake your head, “I never said I didn’t appreciate the view Astarion dearest, just trying to be considerate”
As the two of you sit on the bank of the stream, things have finally returned to some semblance of normal. It’s nice. Neither of you talks about your past, or what just happened, but there’s this feeling between the two of you, one of understanding.
Tonight didn’t turn out the way either of you expected, but sometimes things happen this way for a reason. Maybe the two of you had more in common than you could ever imagine?
*Again, sorry that this was so self-indulgent, thank you for reading!!*

Hurtful Words and Bear Hugs
Astarion x gn!reader x Halsin
Word Count: 1,411
TW: Spoilers for Astarion's story in Act 3, mentions Astarion's victims, reader crying
Hi! It's been awhile!
This game literally has me in a choke hold. I am so weak for these two men. I love that you can have a little romance between the three of you. 🥰
As always, I hope you enjoy. Feel free to send any requests for these two as they own my thoughts at the moment!
The days following their victory over his past master, Astarion had struggled with his thoughts and feelings. He felt terrible for how distant he had become, especially as you tried your best to be supportive. Yourself struggling with how to balance giving him his space and wanting to just hold the lost man until his world seemed to piece itself together again.
The one thing stopping him from his full blow guilt was that Halsin was there to distract you at times. The larger man seemed to have a better grasp on his emotions than Astarion did, always seeming to pull you off to some task that needed your attention just at the right times or to lead you back to Astarion's tent with hands and hearts full from their adventures whenever he felt the weight of loneliness creep back in. The pale elf was even sure that at times the druid spoke to Scratch and the owlbear cub to cause small bits of chaos or demand attention from you when he could no longer keep your focus.
Astarion was especially grateful for the times the three of you could spend time together in peaceful silence, either walking around near the camp or just sitting near the fire while he read next to you as you focused on redoing the braids on the side of Halsin's head. While the days seemed to be getting better, and his heart seemed to fill in the empty spots left behind by his revenge and the past that had lead to it, some days seemed to thrust him right back into the deep of it.
He pretended not to see the sad glances you shot him as you racked your brain for some way to help. He knew you meant well and normally he would appreciate it or tease you for how wrapped around his finger you were, but today it just seemed to be to much. He hadn't meant for the groan of annoyance to leave his lips as you came by his tent for the third time today, wanting to check in on him.
"What is it you could possibly want this time?" He snapped as he slammed his book shut, shooting a glare at you from where he sat in his tent. "If you're coming to see how I'm doing, let me save you the breath. I'm the same as I was the other million times you've interrupted me today. Now do you have something to actually contribute to my time or can I read in peace?"
It took a moment for him to realize just what had been said, and by the time the guilt had built up in his chest, your eyes had gone glossy. You turned your face away, not wanting him to see your tears welling up.
"I was just coming to tell you that Halsin and I were going into the city to get a hot meal. I was gonna see if you wanted to come, but I guess I'll let you read."
He could have sworn that he could hear his cold heart crack at the shake in your voice. His lips parted to apologize, but his throat tightened around the words before they could leave. He sat in silence as he watched you turn to walk back to where Halsin was waiting nearby.
His eyes met the druid's before you got to him. The wood elf's eyes seemed to be conflicted, split between knowing Astarion hadn't truly meant to hurt your feelings and the disappointment that the interaction had gone so wrong. Once the two figures were gone from sight, the vampire let out a deep sigh and tried to go back to his book. The words just wouldn't come to him now, and every thought seemed to lead back to the hurt look on your face.
Tossing the book onto the ground next to him, he ran his hands through his hair, partially wishing that he could physically push the thought to the back of his mind or even out of his brain altogether. Deciding to take a walk around camp, the lingering eyes of the other camp inhabitants pushed him to walk further and further away until the camp faded from view.
He wasn't even sure how long he wandered, lost in the downward spiral his mind had fallen into. The tears in your eyes fading into the tears of the past victims as they realized the pain he had lead into. Visions of the lives he had ruined flooded his mind until he couldn't take it. An almost feral scream ripped from his throat as he swung his fist against the trunk of a tree he had wandered to close to, another innocent victim to the control he didn't have over himself.
The pain pulsing in his hand seemed to help ground him as he fell to lean his back against the hard bark. He would have been a sight to anyone wandering by, the pale elf with a bloody hand resting in the ground. His fangs bared in his open mouth, and his chest heaving to try to catch his breath. The now rising moon beginning to reflect off the streaks of wetness down his face.
As his red eyes stared up at the glowing rock, he began to push through the dark thoughts, trying his best to lock them back in the recesses of his mind they belonged in. The sound of your voice began to ring in his mind, helping to fend off the thoughts of self doubt and hatred that lingered. The countless times you had told him that he was good enough, that he was worth being loved and cherished. The times you had kissed his face until these same bad feelings were long forgotten.
As his heart and breath began to settle, the world seemed to know what he needed in that moment, and the wind shifted to blow gently against his face. His lips curled up slightly as the faintest whisp of your scent kissed his skin as if you were there with him. It dawned on him that in the hours he must have been gone that you were probably running yourself wild with worry. A short laugh forced itself from his lips as he imagined Halsin trying to quell your panic, probably saying something about some time in nature doing him good.
The walk back to camp was much quicker that he imagined, his feet pulling him home faster as your scent got stronger. It lead him straight towards Halsin's tent. The deep sound of the man's snore was almost as if he was walking into a real bear hibernating.
He froze for a moment as he saw you curled up against the bear of an elf. Your hand slowly moving back and forth over the hairy chest being the only sign that you were still awake. His feet moved him toward you before he asked them to, before he could even worry about if you would want to see him. He crawled in carefully behind you, not wanting to wake the other. His hand hovered over your side, hesitating at the thought that you may still be hurt.
Your skin against his brought him back to the moment as you pulled his arm over your waist. You thumb began to move side to side on his wrist, your wordless forgiveness warming his chest and releasing tension that he didn't know he was still holding.
"I'm sorry." The words were so quiet as they left his lips that he wasn't even sure he has really said them.
"I know." The quiet response was just as possible to be a fantasy.
"I didn't-" His throat closed again as you turned to look over your shoulder at him.
"I know." Turning your face back forward, you brought his hand to your lips before squeezing it slightly and clutching it to your chest.
The moment of peace was interrupted by the sleeping druid rolling over and throwing his arm over the two. As his thick arm tightened around them, each you and Astarion let out a groan as you were both crushed into the bear hug. The smiles on the three faces and the quiet laughs drifting from the tent seeming to right every wrong in the world for just the moment as the two of you joined Halsin in a well needed night of rest.

Scent Mark
Day 1 of #HalsinTavWeek let's GOOOOOOO!!! Pairing: Halsin/Tav(F) Summary: It's been a really long week. So when Halsin can no longer smell himself on Tav's skin he is...eager to rectify that fact. Rating: Explicit. Minors DNI Warnings/Tags: Smut. Scent kink and possessive behavior. P in V, fingering. No beta we die like Yonas. RIP Yonas. And look, I even put this one on AO3.
Halsin has a preternatural sense for knowing when Tav is around. It’s uncanny. It became something like a game for her, trying to catch him unawares but she never got very close before his eyes were searching for her, always landing on her with such precision she wondered if he could read her mind.
Outside the newly finished construction of their communities' town hall she passes off the tiefling baby in her arms to a slip of a boy at her heels and sends them both off home with a forehead kiss each. She has a little extra time on her hands for once and, as she opens the door in search of her lover, she has her heart set on using every single bit of it.
He was often late coming home these days, his hours full to bursting with the responsibilities of pulling their community together but Tav was determined to roust him from whatever task or pile of paperwork he’d buried himself under. Skirts swishing quietly around her ankles she tugged her hair loose from its unruly braid, carding her fingers through her tresses absently while she poked her nose in each room.
It was a fine building. Large enough for meetings, with several rooms branching off the main hall for both offices and temporary accommodations for fresh transplants. Her bare feet padded quietly across the fresh wooden floors while she conducted her search and rescue.
With the town hall construction finished the druid should in theory be free for the rest of the day and, if Tav had her way, a bit of a break in store for the weekend. Whether he would be amenable to a little vacation was another matter but Tav had a mind to use every single one of her womanly wiles to get her way. It’d been too long since she had had him to herself and she yearned for him, his touch, in a way that was becoming increasingly distracting the longer it continued.
“My heart,” a low voice calls to her from behind a closed door. Confused, Tav swings the door open and finds her love at last, sitting at what could be considered a desk– a few mismatched planks of wood balancing on two barrels– at the back of the room, paperwork strewn about before him. He’s writing something, but pauses, quill poised, to glance up and smile at her warmly.
Rounding the edge of the makeshift desk as he finishes his correspondence Tav smiles when his arms encircle her waist, pulling her close until she’s perched on his lap. He kisses her tenderly while she loops her own arms around his neck, heart fluttering like it always does when he adores her with his casual affection.
When the kiss breaks Tav pinches his chin and complains, “How do you always do that?”
“Do what, my love?” Halsin murmurs distractedly, peppering kisses along her exposed neck down to her collar bone. He lingers there for a moment, hovering, breath hot, and inhales the scent of her skin as if she were some fine city lady wearing expensive perfume.
“How do you always know it’s me? The door wasn’t even open.” Halsin’s kisses are getting less chaste by the second and the feeling of his warm wet tongue licking a stripe up to her ear has her leaning into it, eyes going half lidded with desire.
He pulls his mouth away long enough to answer, nuzzling her neck and pressing his nose against where her pulse has begun to beat erratically. “An unfair advantage I’m afraid. Remember when I told you bears have one of the best senses of smell?”
Tav blushes furiously at the implication. “You… smell me? Gods.” Her skin breaks out in goose pimples when he grazes the delicate skin at her throat with his teeth. “I s-should, um, I should have bathed before I came. I was trying to sneak up on you.”
“Impossible.” One of the hands at her waist travels to her thigh and squeezes the muscle through her skirt. “It’s more than just the scent of your skin. It’s,” he suddenly grabs the fabric of her dress and shoves it up around her waist only minorly surprised when he doesn’t find any smallclothes underneath. “Perfect,” he groans in appreciation with the rumbling purr of a predator, hungry for more.
“Halsin!” Tav’s eyes fly to the open door but does nothing to stop him when his hand returns to her bare leg, stroking the thick, plump flesh of her inner thigh.
“Everyone’s gone home,” he mutters. “I could smell you the second you opened the main door. I could smell this –” Halsin’s hand slides up her thigh until his thick finger strokes her damp cunt and Tav’s breath catches. She’d been warm before but now she blazes with heat. “You have no idea how wild you make me like this,” he says into her throat.
“You?” Scoffs Tav with a grin. “I may not have your sense of smell but I’ve got eyes. It’s been a long week watching you help build this place from the ground up. A very long week.”
“I’ve let myself become consumed with my responsibilities as alderman,” he chases the confession with a nip to her earlobe. Halsin shifts in his seat, tugging her back against his chest. Her legs fall open and before she has time to adjust her balance he uses his knees to open them wider, exposing her completely. “Allow me to atone for it. Let me show you just how much you’ve been on my mind.”
He spares a moment to brush her hair aside and then begins to lick and suck the nape of her neck while she shivers, nipples hardening. With one hand the druid holds her in place and with the other he dives between her legs until he finds the soft wet heat he’s been craving.
She’s already soaking and ready for him and he’s relentless with the way he chases her orgasm under the pad of his finger. Trapped against his chest Tav is helpless to do anything but watch the lewd swirl of his finger as it circles her clit. The bulge of his erection digs into the base of her spine and she tries to use her arms to get the leverage she needs to roll her hips into his lap but his grip on her is ironclad.
“Patience,” he growls and the warning rumbles like thunder from his chest directly into her pussy with a throb.
“Gods, Halsin, you’re driving me crazy.” Tav feels the walls of her vagina begin to clench and exhales in frustration and want. “I was,” she gasps when he switches tactics and buries a finger into her aching hole. “I came here to seduce you , you big– ah !” Her head falls back onto his shoulder when he adds a second finger, increasing his pace. “Not the other way around,” she grounds out through clenched teeth.
Halsin’s answering chuckle is dark. “Seduction accomplished,” he tells her before sucking her earlobe into his mouth.
Tav moans in response, another shiver richoting down her spine and he grunts when he feels her shudder against his achingly hard member. Panting, his lover begins frantically tugging at the ties of her loose blouse to free her chest and grasps at her own breasts, rolling her nipples between shaking fingers desperately.
“Good lass,” he murmurs appreciatively into her hot, sweat slick shoulder before nibbling a trail of feral kisses across her freckled skin. He spears his fingers into her tight heat roughly, thumbing her clit until she keens.
The druid works her over thoroughly, always knowing when she’s close before switching his approach until her speech is reduced to a babble of pleas and an impressive string of curse words.
“Don’t you dare stop!” Her breathing is ragged, her sweat damp hair sticking to her neck and Halsin’s face but he doesn’t care. He can’t get enough. The smell of her sex is heavy in the air, clouding his mind, the taste of her sweat on his tongue and the desperate whimpers he wrings from her all call out to the beast within but his focus on the task at hand remains razor sharp.
Tav squirms, her thighs shaking when he deigns to grant her her release. She cries out, clutching for purchase on the hand he still has braced on her belly while her spine bows and her orgasm tears through her like lightning, hot and sizzling.
She sags, boneless against him and he tenderly kisses the side of her head, her jaw, the sweaty juncture of her shoulder and neck. He buries his nose in her damp hair and breathes deeply before bringing his fingers to his mouth for a taste.
“Gods,” she breathes out hoarsely. “I’m definitely going to need a bath now.”
The unsatiated bear within balks and Halsin can’t stop the possessive snarl he lets out. It’s been too long since their last coupling. The unintended result of which was that not only was just the mere whiff of her sex enough to completely unhinge him. But the primal instinctive urge to cover her scent with his beat like a second heartbeat his dick.
Tav rolls her head to the side to look at him from the corner of her eye and gives him a positively wicked smile. “Keep that up, my bear, and we’ll be late for dinner.”
Halsin’s eyes flash gold at the epithet before he wrests control of himself, the muscles in his jaw clenching. “I don’t know,” he drawls, eyes trailing down her body hungrily. “I see plenty here to sate even my appetite.”
Tav laughs and tugs out of his grip long enough to switch positions to straddle him. He watches her with half lidded eyes as she arranges herself, hands coming to rest on the generous swell of her ass to steady her while she tugs off her blouse and tosses it to the floor.
“You say that now but I shan’t be the one to clean up after the children have wrought their reign of terror on the kitchen.”
The part of Halsin’s brain not currently enraptured by the sway of her breasts in front of his face grudgingly concedes she might have a point. Slender fingers comb through his tawny hair, gently tugging till he looks into her eyes. She looks radiant, flushed from her orgasm and wide dark eyes looking at him so full of love he aches in an entirely different way from the neediness in his breeches.
“You’ve never looked so beautiful,” he whispers, voice rough with sudden piercing sentiment. He loves her so entirely it nearly shakes him to the core with how it wells up to the surface in moments like this, coloring all his words and expressions with passion. He could drown in it. He has drowned it. And he will go into those depths willingly again. For as long as she will take him.
Tav smiles slow and shy, but holds his gaze, nothing but adoration in each line and plane of her expression. “You sweet talker.” She cups his face and drags the pad of her thumb across his bottom lip causing his breath to hitch.
When she kisses him the gentle sweetness of it makes his head spin and he tightens his grip on her reflexively. She opens her mouth to him and he loses himself in the tangle of their tongues, gorging himself on her taste.
Tav slips a hand between their bodies to tug the laces of his breeches loose and frees his dick, giving him a few experimental strokes before lining him up to her slick entrance.
The druid pulls back from their kiss to look at her in concern. “My heart, are you ready to take me so soon?” Foreplay is his speciality not just for the fun of it after all and he worries taking his girth without proper preparation will cause her pain.
Tav smiles impishly. “So soon? Do you know how long I’ve waited for this?” Still holding him steady she begins to sink herself onto him inch by exquisite inch. “As I said,” she continues breathlessly. “It’s been a really long week,” she gasps, eyes sliding shut at the sensation of her wet cunt sliding over him tightly. ”I’m more than prepared for this ,” and with a shift of her hips she fully envelops him with a sigh like relief. “Gods,” she moans, pausing for a moment as her body adjusts to the thick intrusion.
Halsin’s grip on her hips is tight enough to leave bruises, his jaw so tense she takes pity on him and leans forward to tangle her hands in his hair. Bringing his face back to hers for a demonstration on just how ready she was for this he groans into her her opened mouth kiss when she rolls her hips into his.
“Are you alright, my love?” She asks, setting a pace that is at once too much and not enough.
The drag of her tight wet heat has stolen all thought from his brain but he drags his gaze from the point where they are joined to her knowing smile. “More than alright,” he rumbles, mouth dry. “Perfect. You’re perfect.”
Tav doesn’t let his praise distract her though. She places both hands on his chest and shifts until she gains the leverage she needs to increase the pace, bouncing on his cock till she sees stars.
Halsin’s breathing is harsh, ragged, and utterly desperate and the power of her position skitters up her spine tangling with her desire. Despite already having been at the mercy of one torrential orgasm she feels another budding between her legs at the sight of her lover’s expression of naked want.
The druid slides one hand from her ass, over the curve of her hip, the plumpness of her belly. He continues his exploration till he reaches her chest where he palms one breast before switching to the other until both nipples are dark and stiff. When his hand continues its ascent to rest lightly at her collar bone, his long thick fingers reverent around her throat, Tav's eyes roll and her head drops back, lips parting to release a needy whine that goes directly to his balls.
“Your, oh ! H-Halsin,” she struggles to put her words in the right order. The wet slap suction of their bodies crashing together is loud in the otherwise silent building and it turns Tav on even more. “Touch me! I–” Her words cut off as she moans, voice rising. “I’m gonna–!”
Halsin needs no further direction. He can already feel the telltale flutter of her walls clenching on his dick and with practiced ease he thumbs her clit, feeling drunk on the tide of desire that rises in him when she lets out the most unrestrained wail.
If her last orgasm was a lighting bolt this one tears through her like a blazing star, the force of it feels like it might be incinerating her from the inside out. Halsin plants his feet and holds her hips steady while, pistoning into her, chasing his own release with abandon.
Tav gathers what’s left of her shattered mind and babbles a stream of nearly incomprehensible praise. “You feel so good, you fuck me so well, gods you’re perfect, perfect, perfect. My love, my Halsin, my bear, let go, my love, my heart, cum in me, gods Halsin! Yes, yes! ”
Halsin finishes with an animalistic roar, eyes blazing gold, clutching her body to his and shooting his load into her ruined pussy. When the haze of his orgasm fades she’s peppering his face with kisses, murmuring praise against his sweaty face and nuzzling the skin of his throat tenderly.
He combs his fingers through her sweat damp tresses till he cups her head and brings her lips to his. The afterglow of their coupling is warm and hazy with soft smiles and softer kisses. If he could he’d carve out this pocket of time and sequester the both of them in it for as long as he possibly could. Let the world tumble on without them for a time while he buried himself in the soothing warmth of her love and affection.
Responsibilities and duty do not care to bend to his will tonight though and when Tav’s stomach gives a particularly loud growl they both smile and laugh. Cleaning and tucking himself back into his trousers takes little time so while Tav fixes her blouse and skirts he takes her hips and settles her back on his knee. She turns and gives him a raised brow, expression half mischievous and half chastising but he minds his manners. Combing his fingers through her hair and braiding it in the style she prefers now he finishes with a lingering kiss to the nape of her neck. He hums, enjoying how the scent of sweat, pheromones and sex remains deliciously thick there.
When they leave the town hall hand in hand Tav leans into his arm, chatting about her day and pulling smiles and laughter from him with tales of what troublemaking their charges have been up to. He breathes in deeply, the bear in him well satisfied by how her scent is now thoroughly mixed with his again.
That's All Folks!

Why I believe Zevlor should become a companion in act 2 instead of Halsin:
1. Halsin is a druid and in act 3 we get Jaheira - that way in a good playthrough we get two druids which is kinda pointless in my opinion from the mechanical standpoint
2. Minthara is supposed to be an evil-playthrough companion and Halsin a good-playthrough one (I know that now you can have them both, but that was the original idea) - it would make sense to have a good version paladin and a bad version paladin
3. It would be especially interesting considering Zevlor is an oathbreaker and Minthara is not - I like the twist of the "good" option being the oathbreaker
4. Halsin's story ends in act 2. When you defeat the shadow-curse his arch is over, there isn't much more to him (he just has some thoughts about how the city is not balanced). There isn't much there to explore after he fixed his "mistakes from the past". He's just there and after some time of not much conversation he's just "yeah, you wanna smash?"
5. Zevlor still has a lot to work through after his people got captured and killed and he didn't do anything - there's A LOT of material for development
6. (very subjective) Zevlor's story is much more interesting. Halsin is exactly who he seems to be. Obsessed with nature and balance, the most stereotypical druid you could imagine. You know, the whole "just as nature intended" thing. Zevlor is an idealist who fought for people of Elturel only to be betrayed by them when they won - casting him and other tieflings out. THAT was when he broke his oath, when they were cast out. How exactly? We don't know. It is said that it wasn't even the oath that was broken but his faith itself - there is so much to explore there! But all we get is a short conversation telling him he cannot give up and he's like oh shit, you're right and then he appears for the final battle
7. I think him and Jaheira would really vibe together. The mom and dad of the group - the cynical Harper who has a complicated relationship with that institution and an idealistic oathbreaker paladin who just wanted to protect his people but failed
8. LARIAN PLEASE LET ME FUCK THAT SWEET OLD MAN

Warnings; bg3, full party (because I want them all there to talk), Druid Tav*, Slight druid path spoilers I guess?, Owlbear, Protector type Tav, yandere companions (ALL of them), basic identity spoilers for first act followers, slight early story spoilers, they/them reader, yandere Raphael makes an appearance too.
* Tav is the name that always appears in the character generator first, so technically Tav is the unofficial term for the player character- or Reader in this scenario.
~~~~~~~~
The large owlbear lumbered slowly amongst the fallen undead, using the sharp beak to pick around the bodies for anything useful. Of course, not everything picked up by the defacto leader of the group was typically deemed useful. Such was the way of the unusual soul the group found themselves following the every whim of.
Countless battles had been won with their leadership and each companion had true respect for their leader, even if respect for the other companions was variable. To take them from desperate and hopeless about their plight to truly believing they could succeed their impossible mission. Each odd soul brought in to the fold by the odd druid may not believe, but they believed in how much their leader believed. For them, this was enough.
This meant that when their trusted leader wandered around as a creature that could feasibly carry three of them, they just followed along and grabbed what they wanted if their leader didn't pick it up first. They trusted their leader to distribute loot and treasure adequately based off of who could best use what was collected. Still, that didn't make the experience any less surreal, even for those who were familiar with druids that favored their bestial forms.
"Astarion, do you ever feel like we, as a group, just adapt to everything around us a little too well?"
Gale, the wizard of the group walked next to the rogue vampire spawn, his arms crossed in a contemplative way. Never before would he have imagined himself having light banter with such a being without bloodshed, but here he was regardless.
"Do tell me you are joking, right?"
"No, should I be?"
"God's, Gale, we're all stuck here as a group with only one thing in common- the fact that we're facing impossible odds to simply survive- and we can barely keep ourselves from killing each other. On top of that, just what do you think we're doing right now? Hm?"
"... Collecting the spoils of our battle?"
There was a distinct moment of silence as the beautiful vampire spawn stared at the wizard with a look of disbelief and disgust. The apparent pause catching the attention of the rest of the party- minus the owlbear lumbering ahead of the group- as they all decided to listen in. It was good fun to hear the others squabble and it gave a sense of comradery despite the situation they were in, misery loving company in most ways, though things weren't seeming too miserable now.
"We are in a temple that is inside of a crypt- some depth underground- picking amongst the remains of reanimated corpses that have all been stomped to death by our Owlbear leader. Not to mention this leader who just so happens to be the most balanced person among us and somehow isn't corrupt as all hells while doing it."
Some of the others nodded along in their own ways, knowing Astarion's assessment wasn't too far off from the crux of the situation they found themselves in. A few cast glances at the afore mentioned owlbear leader who seemed rather content rooting through what little remained from their earlier rampage.
"And they're hot as the hells while doing it."
Karlach, the literal flaming tiefling barbarian, commented, putting herself in the conversation with a wide grin.
"You're one to talk, Karlach," Wyll playfully jabbed back, "You've literally got fire coming out of you!"
"You know I'm right though!"
"Well, I didn't say you were wrong."
Before the two could continue, Astarion cut them off, bringing the now group conversation back to Gale.
"Anyways, my point still stands. We are not the ones who make this all work. They make it work for us. We are stuck together- like it or not- and they call the shots. We can get used to anything because they can get used to anything. Don't pat yourself on the back too hard now, it might get you excited."
Gale slightly winced at that jab, given the fact that he was the most obvious about being smitten with the group leader, and yet his beloved was completely unaware of how hard he had fallen. How hard they all had fallen.
"Are you all fools," Shadowheart hissed in a low voice, "you know they can hear us, right?"
It was Lae'zel's turn to bark out a laugh, her lips curled in a sly grin as she regarded the Sharian cleric. It gave the Githyanki soldier a sense of satisfaction to know something about their leader the cleric didn't.
"They can't understand us in that owlbear form. Why else would these fools talk so plainly?"
Unknown to them, their leader could understand them, but simply didn't want to cause in-fighting or favoritism to arise. So they simply carried on as if unaware of the conversation, just trying to focus on finding what was salvageable.
Unknown to them all, a demon watched from the rafters. His arms were crossed and a grin played across his lips. He had to admit, that druid was certainly a fetching prize as they clearly enamored not only their mismatched companions but him as well. Time would leave him the last among them by the druid's side, he would ensure it. Besides, he had plenty of time to wait.
Great Old One, Mormo
Image © @chimeride, accessed at his tumblr here
[Monster Number 1900! And, in honor of that milestone, I am finally, finally, posting the statistics for Mormo, Goddess of Predators. She's been haunting this blog for about a year now, being one of the prime movers and shakers in the Age of Monsters campaign seed I sewed back last May, and have been teasing with NPCs and articles. She was intended to have been posted as a capstone to the "Monster Girl Summer" theme last year, but life got in the way.
She is also written in tribute to @abominationimperatrix. Of all of the people who I have met through my writing, she is the one who is most dear to me, and the Age of Monsters was inspired by us going from friends and confidants to lovers and soulmates last April. The Age of Monsters is intended to be a campaign that ties into our shared love of thinking with monsters, about deep ecology, weird creatures and world mythology, and of the importance of love and trust in a time of global chaos and destruction. I love you, Goddess, my Dearest Friend.]
Mormo CR 28 N Outsider This titan is a reptilian humanoid the size of a giant. She has a nest of writhing serpents for hair and six arms, each ending in long sickle claws. She is a serpent from the waist down, although a mass of scar tissue reveals she once had two tails that grew like legs from a pair of hips. Her remaining tail ends in a bushel of thorny spines. A pair of wings like those of a primeval reptile grow from her back.
Mormo The First Medusa, Goddess of Predators N Great Old One of ecology, reptiles and terror Domains Knowledge, Scalykind, Strength, Trickery Subdomains Competition, Fear*, Thought, Venom Worshipers druids, goblins, gnolls, naturalists Minions monsters of all kinds (especially hybrids) Holy Symbol a medusa’s head in profile Favored Weapon claw (or sickle) *clerics of Mormo can use the Fear subdomain to modify the Trickery domain
Mormo is the Goddess of Predators. She was born from the fear felt by the first animal with enough imagination to see a shadow and think it a predator. For millions of years, she was bestial, primordial, little more than a serpentine shadow, but as sapience developed and the gods began to take interest in souls, her mind sharpened, and she became as dangerous for her strategies as her teeth and claws. Mormo views the natural world as one to be studied in order to best determine what to hunt and how to hunt it, with the unblinking patience of a snake. Her hunts, and those of her followers, are focused to maintain the active equilibrium of ecological balance—reducing overpopulated species, controlling trophic cascades, and taking out species that consume more than their fair share of resources.
Mormo was once called the Mother of Monsters, and many species of monster found throughout the planes are her descendants. Mormo’s descendants tend to be creatures that combine mammalian and reptilian or avian features; griffons, medusae, chimeras and dragonnes are among her creations. In the past, she had many lovers and created new species with their lineages. The most notorious of these collaborators was Typhon, a Lord of Hell and former asura rana, created from the divine mistake of allowing dragons to proliferate. Despite his evil nature, Typhon truly loved Mormo, and spread cults of her under the alias “Echidna”. Mormo cared little for her humanoid followers, preferring the worship of the powerful individual monsters who hunted by her side. But Mormo also had enemies. And she was gazed upon with hungry eyes by Lamashtu, then a demon of infanticide who sought to become the Lord of Beasts and Queen of Demons. And Mother of Monsters.
Lamashtu ambushed Mormo, and was victorious after a battle that lasted for a full day. Lamashtu ripped the baby from Mormo’s womb and raised him as her own; this is Typhon’s last son, Abraxas. Lamashtu tore off one of Mormo’s twin tails, which regenerated into a cancerous creature on its own right. This was the origin of Geryon, who spread treacherous lies suggesting that Typhon and Lamashtu were lovers. This got Typhon demoted and murdered by Asmodeus; Geryon took Typhon’s place as a Lord of Hell and spent millennia erasing his predecessor from history. The blood that spilled from both combatant’s wounds grew into creatures with serpentine and humanoid traits; Mormo’s blood became the first nagas, and Lamashtu’s the first mariliths. And Mormo was slain, reborn as a mundane snake to regenerate in the First World for centuries, and maintaining her cosmic sulk for millennia more
But now Mormo stirs in her slumber. And she is ready to take her revenge.
As befits a Goddess of Predators, Mormo is a terror in combat. Millennia of dormancy and a closer tie to the natural world than other Great Old Ones has stripped her of an unnatural presence, but her fourfould gaze can petrify, paralyze, terrorize or merely strike enemies dead. She is extremely venomous, and those that have survived her venom report, chillingly, that it induces euphoria even as it breaks down tissue into a bloody mess. She uses her fangs (both in her own mouth and those in her serpentine hair) and claws in melee, and can fire the spines from her tail like arrows. One of Mormo’s most recently developed talents is witchcraft. She has made an arcane bond with the phouka Gigi, and Gigi treats Mormo as a patron even as Mormo treats Gigi as a familiar for storing spells. Gigi spends most of her days separate from Mormo on the Material Plane, and so Mormo usually maintains a small spell selection through Spell Mastery. If she is encountered with Gigi, Mormo has access to a much wider variety of spells (all witch spells from the Core Rulebook at least).
The cult of Mormo is small and scattered, but the First Medusa pays it much more heed than she did in her youth. Religious rituals include studying nature and monsters (either through texts or in the field), hunting for food, and mock chases and hunts among the congregation. Supplicants often use makeup, costumes, and illusion and transmutation magic to appear as different types of predators and prey for these hunts. Once someone is “caught”, the result is play fighting, sex or both instead of actual killing or consumption. Mormo’s worshippers value diversity of all kinds, and are often allies of other divinities with portfolios involving nature, scholarship and hedonism. As goblin and gnoll societies break free of Lamashtu’s influence, they often find Mormo, and her cult is growing fastest among these two species.
S3 eps 7-9 thoughts below the cut
This is all fresh after the episode and I gotta be up in a couple hours so it won't be fully thought out but...
I love a lot of the creative choices being made! But I think many weren't implemented well, or balanced nicely.
Just! as someone who has deconstructed Campaign 1 and made deviations to the timeline of events and etc (mind you, without the same goal of condensing things for television… but somehow the show has an equivalent perc'ahlia focus to a ship-centered fic?) I think… I can see several avenues of narrative choices that would strengthen the ideas they're going with instead of weakening them.
(My credentials here are 'almost 300k canon divergent AU that converged on a handful of similar plot points to TLOVM', but also the aims of an AU fanfic =/= that of a show. I understand and respect that challenge the team faced. But when a single amateur can point out issues that would be pretty easy to solve and detract from a very enjoyable experience... there might be a Problem)
Ripley doesn't need a sob story, she's getting a book anyways leave it there. Fully agree with @/aq2003. The whole point is that she's monstrous and evil and got her PhD out of a fucking cereal box. Percy is less like her than he thinks. But he dies and she just??? escapes??? IF Percy had to die without VM being present, having Ripley either die of her wounds right after or be unable to flee and get torn to shreds by them would have been excellent.
On that note - only Vex and Cass seem to show strong emotion about his death. Keyleth's supposed to be his best friend, and he and Grog were close this season, but. Well, not like we have any platonic relationships. Everyone's just Kinda Sad.
MAYBE IT'S BECAUSE OF THE MUSIC OVER PERCY'S DEATH HUH. Flashbacks to watching Vampire Diaries as a teenager and pop songs coming on over the end-of-episode drama.
Again just. All the platonic, non-familial (Pike n Grog count. to me. buddies <3) relationships are so scant, which is especially hard on characters who lean on that so hard! Grog and Keyleth especially are hurt by this. Does Keyleth have a single conversation (not quip, conversation) that isn't with Vax? And in group contexts she only loudly brings up her distrust of Raishan without any of the solid backbone it has in fact. (Also her going from Raishan was right last time we should trust her now / She betrayed us! Knew it! / oh maybe she didn't and I should apologize. girl. come on. please)
I have Concerns about 'late Game of Thrones teleportation' syndrome happening here. Scanlan goes from Wildemount back to Whitestone (which are completely different continents) with no explanation. Kash and Zahra make it to Emon (again, different continent to Issylra) just in the nick of time. Which, sure, would take a couple of days to carve Percy a nice likeness (but you have a druid who can manipulate stone right there), and if Kash and Zahra changed their minds and set out as soon as Vax talked to them they might make it! But uh. There's a lot of transport that's omitted, while the scenes give the impression everything is happening within a short period of time. And a lot of these conversations are one-on-ones with the relevant characters without acknowledging they couldn't be there without magical transport. Where is Allura or Gilmore or Keyleth in the back of these shots twiddling their thumbs 'hey can we teleport to the next person on our HELP US list'?
IDK what's going on with Kash. He's likely gonna be used as a lead-in to Something to rez Percy (and him?) but. That quick buildup of him being too carefree to getting smushed was very transparent and Zahra's grief didn't feel earned (though it WAS baller. yes they made them bleed girl <3).
The fact Vax didn't ask him At All about the resurrection ritual in the Tomb stuns me tho. You think Vax remembered the offhand comment Kash made about the body needing to be warm while his sister was dead? We as an audience could have used a reminder, and Vax too. Because anyone who Doesn't remember this one line from S2 is Extra frustrated at everyone for being stupid.
Raishan or Ripley being moved to be the 'Vox Machina, united, with all their Vestiges' fight is... hmn. You could argue Raishan has solid buildup (what with the cameo in Brimscythe's lair), and it does follow campaign canon. She lacks the devastating power to justify the use of all the Vestiges (tbh given Thordak it might feel like a curbstomp unless her necromantic plans are successful)... but I could see it working. But why the fuck has Ripley escaped A THIRD TIME. Percy even duped her twice! How many times are we gonna do that song and dance?
If anything, I'd have moved some Ripley stuff here. If she escapes so be it but VM putting the fate of the world on hold to avenge their friend, THEN have Percy be back for Thordak, would be tasty.
... wait does this mean Percy might not have Cabal's Ruin by the final dragon fight of the season? ffs-
DID NO ONE LOOT CABAL'S RUIN FROM THE FACTORY.
Thordak fight was baller, having all our NPCs there to worry about? a bit much. Cass why are you here. Go home before Whitestone loses its last de Rolo.
Also. Thordak my dude I know you're insane. mad even. but uh... you sent your children into battle. A TON have already died by the time you sadly nuzzle the hatchlings. This was kinda your fault. There's a reason animals don't send their babies into combat. then again you're a large reptile who talks about milk so what do I, a reptile researcher, know -
(Don't give me that crap about reptiles being bad parents we have several snakes who require maternal attendance after birth or they're Asocial Weirdos, crocodilians are VERY goo parents, and there are social lizards too.)
'fix him - FIX HIM' being gutted fucking killed me :c
I sure hope Pike's 'IT'S ME' was uh. about faith in herself. Not abandoning the god she spent all of S1 figuring out how to devote herself to. While wearing the Vestige associated with another god. the vestige that explicitly made this possible and not a nuke fire falls u all die tpk. haha. ha. (@/burr-ell)
Yes yes yes I know the voiceover and visuals fill in for 'I hear my mother in the morning. Fuck you'. but. idk. Felt like the grief of that moment was taken out of it? Also it's a banger line
Raishan's little killsteal attempt being bumped from Vorugal to Thordak was tasty! Go green girl go! ... except it did nothing but set up a few quiet moments before she turned on everyone again.
The amount of times I'm seeing things happen Again in this is... not great.
Glintshore is Not Glinting. Where is my broken glass difficult terrain?
Perc'ahlia arc fuckin impeccable tho. Delicious
And Pike got lots of fun and stunning moments so far! And Grog takin down the lair!
I love a lot of this though. The hallucination gas. Percy vs Ripley in the factory was so cool. Percy downright being Put in a Box for a while. VEX'S CONVERSATION WITH SYLDOR!!! SO MUCH!! Her being the leader and feeling so responsible for all this, and seeing herself become her father! ELAINA BACKSTORY! Scanlan leaving the party only to miss Kaylie too! Thordak being A Dad! Percy's death/Vex's grief being the catalyst for Vaxleth! The animation was fucking stellar - Vax killing Thordak, Percy's death, Pike mastering the Plate.
I don't have concrete thoughts on how I'd restructure the episodes/season (seasons?) to better balance platonic and romantic relationships, and utilize the changes to their fullest potential. But damn if the temptation to do ANOTHER canon divergence rewrite / exploration of cause and effect to make things hit a bit more nicely... make myself a challenge to only use X amount of scenes per episode/chapter, to try and match the difficulty of adapting this to television... idk
#tlovm spoilers#cr spoilers#I keep editing this w more things i enjoyed but... there definitely were some choices I don’t quite Get
